Instagram Denies Data Breach Affecting 17 Million Accounts Despite Leaked Database
Instagram representatives have officially denied a data breach affecting 17 million accounts, while simultaneously confirming they have patched a vulnerability that enabled mass password reset email campaigns.
The company explicitly states that their systems were not compromised, despite a recent database dump containing information from 17.5 million user accounts being circulated online. This mass password reset campaign has been directly linked to the alleged data breach initially reported by Malwarebytes security researchers.
According to Malwarebytes, the compromised data has been freely distributed across multiple hacking forums. The threat actor responsible for publishing the dump claims the information was collected in 2024 through an Instagram API vulnerability.
The leaked dataset contains information from 17,017,213 Instagram profiles, including phone numbers, usernames, real names, physical addresses, email addresses, and Instagram IDs.
Complete breakdown of the compromised data:
• 17,015,503 Instagram IDs
• 16,553,662 usernames
• 6,233,162 email addresses
• 3,494,383 phone numbers
• 12,418,006 real names
• 1,335,727 physical addresses
