IBM Plans to Triple Entry-Level Hiring in 2026 Despite AI Automation Trends
While the artificial intelligence industry continues to assert that AI will replace entry-level positions, not all enterprises are reducing their hiring in these roles. IBM, a major hardware and technology services provider, is taking a contrarian approach by significantly expanding its entry-level workforce.
According to Bloomberg's reporting, IBM intends to triple its entry-level hiring in the United States in 2026. Nickle LaMoreaux, IBM's Chief Human Resources Officer, announced this initiative at Charter's Leading With AI Summit on Tuesday.
"And yes, it's for all these jobs that we're being told AI can do," LaMoreaux stated, addressing common concerns about AI-driven job displacement.
Reimagining Entry-Level Roles
LaMoreaux emphasized that these positions will differ substantially from traditional entry-level roles at IBM. The company has restructured job descriptions to focus less on tasks susceptible to AI automation—such as routine coding—and more on human-centric competencies like customer engagement and relationship management.
This strategic approach aligns with workforce development best practices. By investing in less experienced talent, IBM ensures a pipeline of skilled professionals capable of filling higher-level positions as they advance within the organization. The company has not disclosed specific hiring numbers for this initiative.
AI's Impact on the Labor Market
The year 2026 may prove critical in determining AI's actual impact on employment. An MIT study conducted in 2025 estimated that 11.7% of jobs could already be automated by AI. Additionally, multiple investors surveyed have indicated that 2026 will begin to reveal AI's true influence on labor markets, even when not specifically asked about employment trends.
IBM's decision to expand entry-level hiring represents a significant counterpoint to prevailing narratives about AI-driven workforce reduction, suggesting that strategic human capital investment remains essential even in an increasingly automated business environment.
