Jack Altman Joins Benchmark as General Partner, Bringing Alt Capital Team Along

Jack Altman and Benchmark announced today that he is joining the prestigious venture capital firm as a general partner, marking a significant shift in the VC landscape. This move is particularly noteworthy given that Altman has been operating his own venture capital firm, Alt Capital, since 2024.

Alt Capital demonstrated impressive fundraising momentum, securing $150 million for Fund I in early 2024, followed by a remarkable $274 million Fund II raised in just one week in September 2025. According to his LinkedIn profile, Altman described the past two years running Alt Capital as "the most rewarding" period of his professional life, emphasizing his passion for innovative concepts and collaborative mission-driven work.

The firm's investment portfolio includes at least 52 companies according to PitchBook data, with notable investments in:

• Rippling
• Antares Nuclear
• CompLabs

In an unusual arrangement, Altman announced that his team members from Alt Capital will be transitioning to Benchmark alongside him. This represents a departure from Benchmark's traditional organizational structure, which has historically operated as a flat partnership consisting primarily of general partners without hierarchical layers of junior investors.

The future of Alt Capital and whether Benchmark has acquired its portfolio remains unclear at this time. However, Altman confirmed that he will retain his board seats at companies he backed during his tenure at Alt Capital.

Jack Altman, younger brother of OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman, is also the founder of HR platform Lattice, where he continues to serve as chairman. Neither Altman nor Benchmark representatives provided additional comments on the announcement.
