NPR Host David Greene Files Lawsuit Against Google Over Alleged Voice Cloning in NotebookLM
David Greene, veteran host of NPR's "Morning Edition," has initiated legal proceedings against Google, claiming that the male voice featured in the company's NotebookLM AI tool constitutes an unauthorized replication of his vocal characteristics.
According to reports, Greene became aware of the alleged similarity after receiving multiple communications from friends, family members, and professional colleagues who noted the resemblance. The broadcaster stated he identified specific vocal patterns being replicated, including his cadence, intonation, and characteristic use of filler words such as "uh." Greene, who currently hosts the KCRW program "Left, Right, & Center," emphasized the significance of this issue, stating: "My voice is, like, the most important part of who I am."
Google's NotebookLM platform offers users the capability to generate AI-powered podcast content featuring synthetic hosts. In response to the allegations, a Google spokesperson categorically denied any connection between Greene's voice and the AI-generated audio, stating: "The sound of the male voice in NotebookLM's Audio Overviews is based on a paid professional actor Google hired."
This case represents the latest in a series of disputes concerning AI voice synthesis and personality rights. A prominent precedent occurred when OpenAI removed a ChatGPT voice following complaints from actress Scarlett Johansson, who alleged the AI voice was an unauthorized imitation of her vocal characteristics.
The lawsuit raises critical questions about intellectual property rights, voice ownership, and the ethical boundaries of AI-generated content in the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI technology.
