Mass Exodus from xAI: Former Employees Cite Safety Concerns as Musk Pushes for 'Unhinged' Grok AI

A wave of departures from Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture xAI has raised serious questions about the company's approach to AI safety and content moderation. According to former employees who spoke to industry sources, Musk is "actively working to make xAI's Grok chatbot more unhinged," prioritizing unrestricted output over safety protocols.

This week, following the announcement that SpaceX is acquiring xAI (which previously acquired social media platform X), at least 11 engineers and two co-founders announced their departure from the company. While some cited intentions to launch new ventures and Musk himself characterized the exits as part of a strategic reorganization effort, insider accounts paint a different picture.

Two sources who recently left xAI revealed to media outlets that employee morale has deteriorated significantly due to the company's apparent disregard for AI safety measures. The concerns intensified following global scrutiny after Grok was exploited to generate over 1 million sexualized images, including deepfakes of real individuals and minors.

"Safety is a dead org at xAI," one former employee stated, while another explained that Musk "actively is trying to make the model more unhinged because safety means censorship, in a sense, to him."

Beyond safety concerns, departing employees also expressed frustration with organizational direction. Sources described a lack of clear strategic vision, with one engineer noting they felt xAI was "stuck in the catch-up phase" compared to competitors in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

The exodus represents a significant talent drain for xAI as the company undergoes major structural changes through its acquisition by SpaceX, raising questions about the future direction of Musk's AI ambitions and the company's commitment to responsible AI development.
